What We Do

We're on a mission…

The M&G DAF helps Canadian families, working with each generation in each the family, expand their options for philanthropy. We operate on the basis that philanthropy goes beyond giving money to good causes. The reality is that Canadian families, particularly families that built their wealth through entrepreneurship, want to build a real-world legacy through encouraging a new generation of entrepreneurs.

We build a philanthropy strategy that excites and resonates with every generation of entrepreneurial families. We offer a different approach that blends of philanthropy with innovative investment structures into Canadian clean, green and health-care technology companies, making it easier for donors to invest in solutions to issues that they care about.

The M&G DAF pairs philanthropy with investment opportunities into early-stage pre-commercialization green clean and health technology companies. We work with the small but growing equity investment arms of Canadian charities so that we are furthering their objectives with greater leverage. We work with philanthropic fund providers to identify funds and companies that align with each family’s vision and the areas in which they want to make a sustainable impact.

Team

Meet our founders

Frank McGillicuddy

Co-Founder, Lead Client Relationship Manager

Frank worked in Wholesale Funding and Bond Repo at TD Securities for 25yrs, where he solved pricing, liquidity and trading problems using tax, regulatory and foreign exchange arbitrage as well as proprietary economics/markets knowledge. He retired as a Managing Director in 2019. Since leaving TD he has worked in High-Net-Worth tax planning, exploring Private Placement Life Insurance, Structured Partnerships, Donor Advised Funds and Venture Philanthropy. Frank graduated with a B.ASc (Electrical Engineering) from Queen’s University in 1988, where he received the Engineering Society Award. He graduated with an MBA (Dean’s List) from the Ivey Business School at Western University in 1992. While at TD, Frank completed the ACI Diploma and the Partners, Directors and Senior Officers Qualifying Examination offered by the CSI. Frank sees the M&G DAF as a way to close the gap between Canadian and U.S. venture philanthropy. Canadian venture philanthropy has the world’s lowest capital costs, yet its dollar volume still lags the U.S. by orders of magnitude. Canadian donors really can have an impact beyond what donors in any other nation can achieve.

Jonathan Garbutt

Co-Founder, General Counsel

Since graduating from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law, Jonathan has been practicing Canadian income tax law, including matters of general tax planning, global corporate tax minimization, tax advice for M&A, international private investment tax & tax controversy & litigation, as well as international transfer pricing and Canadian trusts & estates law. Jonathan began his practice in international private banking with one of the largest global law firms. There he advised global high net-worth clients with respect to the Canadian tax system including non-resident trusts, tax efficient immigration & emigration as well as building a unique insurance-focused tax planning strategy for high-net-worth Canadians. Jonathan regularly appears on various public events and media, including appearances on the Business News Network (BNN) and the CBC. Prior to attending law school, Jonathan worked as an economist in Ottawa and in Tokyo. Jonathan has volunteered as treasurer of the Tokyo Canadian Club prior to going to law school. He was Treasurer with Grand Moot, Supervisor at Enterprise Legal Services, and Editor at the Law Review while studying law at the University of Toronto. He was recognized for his work with his first firm’s Pro Bono Leadership Council and for his efforts to protect at-risk and disadvantaged youth in Toronto. Jonathan has since been recognized as volunteer of the year by the Alberta Figure Skating Association for his efforts to bring skating lessons to new Canadians and disadvantaged children in Calgary, Alberta.
